Welcome to YarnChick! I am a country girl with a full-time job and a lot of hobbies. I hope to share fun crochet patterns, recipes, and whole lot more. My first free pattern will be for my Mochachino Afghan.
It is a simple 4 count, 3 front- then 1 back-post double crochet (treble for our non-US friends). It is one of those easy-peasy ones that you can work on AND keep pace with a conversation. No pleading “Hold that thought, I’m counting” necessary.
This works up super thick and cozy and just the right size. I have counted it twice and apologize in advance if you find an error – please let me know and I will happily edit the pattern.
This is an original copyrighted design – please only use it for good, not evil. You know the drill. This pattern is only for personal use – please do not sell it or alter it for resale. Blah, blah, blah…
Hook: “I” (5.5mm)
Yarn: “Vanna’s Choice” brand acrylic (3.5 oz ~ 170 yds)
(6 skeins each); Linen, Taupe, & Chocolate
US Stitches: sl = slip stitch
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
dc = double crochet
fpdc = front post double crochet
bpdc = back post double crochet
Notes: each skein will make approximately 5 rows; the pattern is 4 stitches repeated 48 times per row
row 1 – dc in 4th ch from hook (counts as 1 dc), and in each ch to end (192 dc), ch 3 and turn
row 2 – ch 3 counts as 1st stitch, 1 fpdc around each of the next 2 dc, then bpdc around next, *fpdc next 3 then 1 bpdc* repeat all the way across to last 3 stitches and just do the fpdc of the pattern (do not add the final bpdc), ch 3 and turn
the entire pattern is the same as row 2 – change colors after every 5 rows
Variation: you could work any multiple of 5 to make the stripes wider

I’ve been searching for a pattern to make for my son who starts college this fall. This looks perfect! I’d like to use black, gray, white and navy. But just wanted to ask, what are the approx. measurements of your afghan? I’m a beginner, and I tend to crochet tighter, so just wanted to be sure to plan to make bigger if needed. Thanks for sharing, I can’t wait to get started!! 🙂
Mine is approx 5 feet by 6.5 feet. The problem is that I made mine 4 years ago, and it has been badly abused by my husband and it quite stretched out now. I wouldn’t trust my measurements.
Instead, I would suggest doing the 195 chains and stretching it out across a bed the size you want it to fit and adjusting accordingly. Since you are a beginner, always remember that crochet is not an exact science, and that is the beauty of it. Make it the size/color/shape YOU want it to be 🙂
I was trying to find an afghan pattern in black and red and this one may work. Thanks!
Very pretty and easy (hopefully). How do you finish it off??
Extremely easy 🙂 I have made this one twice. The first one, I did not use a border. The second one was bordered by 3 rows of dc in back loops. I kept it simple. You could really add any border you wish. I’d love to see yours when it’s finished!
